A bar-height stool normally has a seat height of 28 to 30 inches, or about 71 to 76 cm, and is designed for a bar or table measuring approximately 40 to 42 inches, or 102 to 107 cm, high. Measure from the floor to the top of the seat, not to the top of the backrest. The pictured stool has a 29.5-inch seat height, making it suitable for standard bar-height surfaces.
Counter-height stools usually have 24- to 26-inch seats for counters around 34 to 36 inches high. Bar-height stools are taller, generally featuring 28- to 30-inch seats for surfaces around 40 to 42 inches high. They are not interchangeable because using the wrong height can reduce legroom and create an uncomfortable seating position.
Leave approximately 10 to 12 inches, or 25 to 30 cm, between the top of the stool seat and the underside of the bar. This provides enough room for comfortable leg movement while keeping the user at a practical height for eating and drinking. Measure to the underside of the bar and account for any thick tabletop or supporting apron.
Place bar stools approximately 26 to 30 inches apart from center to center, leaving at least 6 inches between the seat edges. For seats wider than 18 inches, allow around 8 to 10 inches between stools. In restaurant layouts, leaving about 36 inches behind the stools also provides safer and more comfortable passage for customers and staff.
